This course is the first of a two-course sequence examining the structure and function of the human body and mechanisms for maintaining homeostasis within it.  This portion includes the study of cells; tissues; genetics; and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems. Co requisite: BIO 201L This is a dual enrollment course through GCU and is 4 college credits (3 for lecture and 1 for lab). You will also learn some professional skills while taking this class. These skills include Healthcare Provider CPR, AED and First Aid certification, proper PPE for Healthcare workers, suturing techniques, vital sign collections and many others.

This course provides students will hand-on learning of critical lab skills in the bioscience laboratory. Students work through authentic situations to solve problems and develop a working knowledge of how to professionally engage in a lab setting.

This dual enrollment course addresses the following three focus areas: 1. Fundamentals in Health Care Delivery Overview of current health care professions including career and labor market information. Health care delivery systems, third party payers, and facility ownership. Health organization structure, patient rights and quality care. Health care and life values. Definition and importance of values, ethics, and essential behaviors in the workplace. Worker rights and responsibilities. Healthful living practices to include nutrition, stress management and exercise. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard precautions and facility safety. Use of principles of body mechanics in daily living activities. Basic communication skills which facilitate teamwork in the health care setting. Focus on development of personal communication skills and an understanding of how effective communication skills promote teamwork. Focus on intercultural communication strategies. 2. CPR for Health Care Provider Current American Heart Association standards for one and two rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and obstructed airway procedures on the adult, infant, and pediatric victim. Use of automatic, external defibrillation and resuscitation equipment. 3. Medical Terminology for Health Care Workers Medical terminology used in health care, with special care populations and in special services. Body systems approach to terms related to structures, functions, diseases, procedures, and diagnostic tests. Building and analyzing terms using word parts. Medical abbreviations and symbols and term spelling.
