Participants in this course will read the book "Total Participation Techniques: Making Every Student an Active Learner" by Persida Himmele and William Himmele. Throughout this book study, teachers will evaluate the effectiveness of case study lessons in the book and other outside resources, collaborate with other teachers to create a lesson plan utilizing participation activities and analyze their own use of classroom participation techniques to build students' active engagement in the content goals.

Participants in this course will read the book "5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Dicussions" by Margaret S. Smith and Mary Kay Stein. Throughout this book study, teachers will evaluate the effectiveness of case study lessons in the book and other outside resources, collaborate with other teachers to create a lesson plan for a student-led discussion and analyze their own use of classroom discussions to build students' mathematical understanding.
